A Trip with the Ponies
A Trip with the Ponies
The horses got out
Chief pony opened the gate.
What a rascal he is!
I know they aren’t far
they are just in the bigger pasture for cows.
I climbed the stile
for a better view.
I saw white Chiefie
against the dark woods
and knew my black horse
near him stood.
I gathered their halters
and trudged out to bring
the wayward animals back in.
They let me catch them easily
probably too full to run.
I jumped on the pony
and led my horse.
It was a trip I’d never forget!
We were going along
on a easy course.
Happily I was enjoying the ride.
When I looked down and saw a mushroom line.
I wondered
as the pony stumbled
I saw the mushrooms form a giant circle,
a circle so old
from a long time ago.
Before I became frighten
Peppers’ line never tightened,
Chiefs nose never hit the ground.
We all slid into a fairies home.
Now you think big horses
would squash fairies to bits,
but with all the wonder around,
we had shrunk to fit.
We stood in the middle
of a banquet party
a table was laden with strange things to astound.
The room was lite with millions of stars
and a couple of moons over head,
where the fairies had flown.
I sat on the pony, my horse by my side
I was to scared to move
as the horses looked around,
nostrils flaring,
ears flickering,
to see all the sights in front of me.
I was proud of them as they moved not a foot
and soon the fairies flew closer to look,
with fluttering wings,
and tinkle of bells,
gossamer hair, clothes I could tell,
nothing I had ever seen, looked so well.
Little by little they came a lot closer
until they could pat the horses.
then they were all over,
the two shameless hussies,
as the fairies braided their manes
with bright colored beads,
feathers from no bird,
I had ever seen.
Bells that made all kinds of sounds.
I just watched, scared I’d wake up!
As Pepper acted like a king
with garlands of flowers
around his neck in a ring.
Chief acted just like a pony
as he ate everything off the table.
The fairies talked to them
the ponies answered them back.
They brushed and groomed
and made them shine
all ethereal beauty festoon.
"I hate to break up the party,
so soon.
But we have to go Home.
My family will wonder.
The ponies they need
pastures and sunlight."
With a sad sigh of farewell
they let us go.
I blinked and wondered
if it was all a dream
Did I fall asleep on the pony?
But he shook his head
and the bells answered me.

Sally, I met you and your husband at the art show in Fayetteville last month. I love your and your husbands work! I'm drinking coffee from the beautiful mug I bought for my husband! Your poems are wonderful and I love this one about the fairies. I am checking on classes for my daughters, but I see that Jim does not offer any at the moment, I will definitely keep checking.. I (and my girls) would love to learn how to make pottery. What a wonderful life you both share, doing what gives you most pleasure. I am glad to have met you and Jim. Pottery is something I myself have always dreamed of making and I would love to take classes with my girls. Best of luck and thank you for giving people the opportunity to read and see your work... what a nice morning I'm having already! :) Angela Little
